History of Name Santiago Elementary School was named for 

Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana

RANCHO SANTIAGO DE SANTA ANA 

The Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, a Spanish land grant located entirely within what is now Orange County, became the site of the present-day city of Santa Ana. This vast rancho, once home to two of California’s oldest families—the Yorbas and the Peraltas—covered 62,516 acres. Stretching along the east bank of the Santa Ana River from the mountains to the sea, it provided homes for the third and fourth generations of both families. Over time, the rancho became the location of at least 33 historic adobes. Historian C. E. Roberts, of the W.P.A. Adobe Project (1936), described it as one of the finest examples of a California rancho.

The Rancho stretched more than 25 miles, from the ocean to the mountains, with its western boundary following the southeast bank of the Santa Ana River. Shaped like a bow, it measured about two and a half miles wide at the ocean end and widened to six and a half miles in the middle, tapering to a rounded point on the north end. Midway along its southern border stood Red Hill, a landmark where three famous ranchos met: Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, Rancho San Joaquin, and Rancho Lomas de Santiago. From the top of Red Hill, one could see lands belonging to all three ranchos.
